Vintage Snow Shoe Christmas Door Décor

It’s hard to believe, but it was way back in March of this year when I spotted an old time-y snow shoe on the wall of a local shop. Even though I was in full Spring mode at the time, I snapped it up with a Christmas holiday idea in mind…the trick would be remembering where I stashed it for the rest of the year!

Isn’t it nifty? WWII Military issue.

So I used my Christmas Gift Trick- and set a Google calendar alert for mid-November 2016, reminding myself where I tucked the snow shoe. Sure enough, my calendar pinged last month and here we are- ready to repurpose with snow shoe in hand! It’s a great trick when you buy presents year-round: just set an calendar alert (that reminds of you the hiding place) for several months down the road and you’ll be good to go. After happily retrieving it, I gathered up some materials to bring my idea to life. First up: selecting wired ribbon to create a large bow. After all, this IS going to hang on our front door…

But, which one to choose?

I should make a caveat here- I plan on giving this snow shoe to my in laws for the mountain cabin they’re building, to use as wall décor. SO…that means that anything I do must be temporary so that it can all be undone after the holidays.

So with that in mind, I created a large bow using the plaid ribbon. But before I sealed up the center part, I stuck a twist tie (am I the only one that saves those?) under the flaps and then hot-glued the ribbon together. That way, I could stick the twist tie ends through the criss-crossed leather straps of the snow shoe to hold the bow on!

Shhhh…it’s a secret twist tie. No one but us will know…

A non-permanent solution!

Ta-da! Worked like a charm. AND I supposed I can save the bow for a future project when I’m done- bonus.

Worked perfectly!

Ok- now, to decorate the rest of the snow shoe, I gathered up some of my favorite vintage Christmas cards. Vintage post cards would work…modern cards, too. Really, any holiday paper ephemera would do…AND some miniature wooden clothespins.

See where I’m going with this?

Then, I simply clipped the cards to the snow shoe leather straps, adjusting as necessary to showcase the gorgeous old graphics.

The little clips blend right in, you can hardly see them…

Again- nothing permanent! I can reuse the cards and clips after the holidays.

Now, it was assembled and ready to hang on the door…but it was missing something. Don’t you think?

ALMOST done…

Greenery! It was missing greenery…just a touch. I used natural pieces from the yard (which I can replace every few days). But if I had had faux greens that would have worked, that would have been perfection.

The big reveal!

Doesn’t it look lovely? I’m so glad it worked out- I no longer have my patchwork flannel wreath from last year, so this is a festive and unique replacement “wreath”.

Craft on!
