Can you believe that we’re well into December already? The countdown to Christmas is officially ON! And if it’s a new month, that means it’s a new project post for The Good Life, the DIY/Lifestyle blog from Goodwill Industries of Upstate/Midlands South Carolina.
In celebration of all things holiday, I found inspiration in a motherload of old sewing patterns I found on the Goodwill shelves. I had an idea in mind and these were a perfect medium to play around with.

My muse…
I’ve done project posts on “thrifty gifts” before…but what about thrifty gift wrap? In other words… Thrift Wrap. And with farmhouse/rustic décor all the rage, I figured that the neutral colors of sewing pattern paper would fit right in. And as I played around with things, I ended up with THREE “thrift wrap” ideas. This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.
DIY Christmas Crackers
First “thrift wrap” idea: Make-your-own Christmas crackers. These are super easy to make and use materials you already have around the house. To make mine, I gathered some cardboard tubes (from paper towel rolls, etc.) and some sewing pattern tissue paper.

Ready to get crackin’?
I cut out a rectangle of tissue, rolled my cardboard tube in it (and while mine were empty, normally you’d put a small gift or trinket inside first), and twisted the tissue at each end of the tube.

How easy is that?
Then, I used red and white baker’s twine to tie off the ends before trimming off excess tissue. Aren’t they cute as can be?

…and done!
DIY Rustic Gift Bag
For “thrift wrap” idea #2, I decided to decorate a plain brown gift bag. First, I gathered a rubber stamp (a Christmas tree, in my case- but anything Christmas-y would do) and white ink; then, I just stamped the front of the gift bag.

“Thrift” wrap #2, coming right up.

Step 1: Stamp
After the ink dried, I used sewing pattern paper and plain white tissue to stuff it with. With a little green burlap bow at the handle, I was all set- and it was wonderfully rustic in a farmhouse-style way.

Step 2: Stuff!
“Thrift Wrapped” Boxes
Last but not least, I simply used the sewing pattern tissue as straight-up gift wrap some boxes. My boxes were already brown/beige, which worked well under the tissue. Other colors may require a double layer of sewing pattern tissue, but you’ll get plenty of it in a single packet- so no worries there!

Rustic wrapping: A farmhouse look for just a few pennies.
There you have it- three ways to wrap gifts using STUPENDOUSLY CHEAP old sewing patterns! And you know what, I really do love the rustic look…they fit right in with our Christmas décor.

Ta-da!
I’m pretty sure several of our stocking gifts will come as Christmas crackers…why didn’t I think of doing that before??
Craft on!
