Hudson’s Bay Inspired Winter Décor

The colorful stripes of a Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket are burned into my childhood memory, thanks to a great-uncle in Canada. He had gifted one to my parents as a wedding gift, and it came in awfully handy during the classic Chicago winters of my childhood. And while the blanket itself is long gone, I was able to purchase an amazing tote bag using one that had been repurposed!

My beautiful bag…and project muse!

When I got it out during the holidays last year, I realized just how iconic those stripes are…and how fun it would be to give an inspired makeover to some humdrum housewares from the thrift store. Because, you know what? White ceramics- bowls, jars, crocks, pitchers, mugs, etc.- positively litter the shelves at most secondhand shops. And it didn’t take me long at all to find some excellent makeover contenders.

White ceramic canister? Perfect for a makeover!

…and more blank canvases!

Once I had my thrifted ceramic “canvases” in hand, it was time to give them a simple makeover to replicate the Hudson’s Bay look. This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.

First, I color matched craft paint using my tote bag as a guide in red, yellow, green, and blue.

Can you say color match?

Then, I used my rotary cutter set to create thin strips of painter’s tape, which I wrapped around each ceramic “canvas”. I pressed the tape down as much as possible to keep the paint from bleeding under.

Prep work: DONE!

When I was satisfied with the tape placement, I carefully stippled paint in between strips of tape…creating the quintessential Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket stripes!

Ohhhh, I hope this works out…

After the paint stripes dried, I gingerly removed the tape. Now- even though I have no intention of ever running one of my décor pieces through the dishwasher, I decided to “cure” my paint job in the oven. I set all three pieces in an oven-safe dish inside a cold oven. I pre-heated the oven to 300°F, and when the oven reached temperature, I set the timer for 30 minutes.

Just as insurance…

After 30 minutes, I turned the oven off and left everything inside to cool down naturally. Once everything was room temperature again, I removed everything from the oven. For further insurance, I gave each piece a light spray of clear sealant. THEN they were ready to be displayed!

Oh my gosh- LOVE!

Aren’t they fantastic? I just adore how they turned out, even though the paint job isn’t 100% perfect. I can fill them with pinecones or branches…or just leave them empty. And for the canister, I sanded down the top and conditioned it to give it a clean, fresh surface (the original shellac had started to chip away).

Which piece is your favorite?

These are a nice change of pace from my go-to flannels and plaids for winter…and such a fun way to jazz up plain housewares from the thrift store.

Craft on!
