Ok, you guys- I went “shopping” in my garage again and decided to finally repurpose this wooden cake stand base. It was one of those “I’ll think of a project later” purchases while thrifting one day… I try not to buy much with that mindset (hello! That’s how hoarding begins!), but it found its way into my cart…and then into my garage…and finally has its day as a project.

No top, no problem…
I can’t explain why, but I couldn’t shake the idea of turning it into a game board of sorts. I haven’t repurposed anything into a game before, so why not? This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.
First things first, I gave it a makeover with some Rust-Oleum chalk paint (I used the spray paint version).

Just needs a fresh start!
After the paint dried, I distressed it along the edges to add contrast and buffed it with clear wax. But when it came time to try my hand at painting straight lines for a tic tac toe board, I panicked. Straight lines?? That is WAY too much pressure for an amateur like myself.
So…I decided to cheat a little and used teal colored washi tape!

Washi to the rescue!

Done in seconds- SO much easier than paint.
Seriously, that was so much less stressful than trying to paint those lines..!
Now, I needed my “x’s” and “o’s” for tic tac toe…so I went shopping in my garage again! For my o’s, I decided to use some small (2”) doilies that I had purchased on Etsy eons ago. And for my x’s, I used crocheted lace ribbon. Since the doilies were 2” wide, I snipped ten 2” strips of lace ribbon and quickly stitched them into a cross/x-shapes by hand.
Since I had painted the cake stand tic tac toe board white, I needed to dye my game pieces. But going through the actual fabric-dyeing process seemed a little complicated for such small bits. So, I decided to color them with fabric ink instead- definitely an easier option for this task!

Creating shabby x’s and o’s…
So I dabbed them with fun, summery colors- yellow for the doily o’s and grapefruit pink for the lace ribbon x’s.

Behold the power of fabric ink (Doily “o’s”!)

And lace ribbon “x’s”!
It was super easy to do…and I purposefully didn’t ensure that every fiber had been inked (for a shabbier look). I let them dry overnight and ta-da, I’m ready to play tic tac toe!

So summery- and they’ll totally work as tic tac toe pieces.
And just like that, I had a cute, fresh tic tac toe board! I love the summery look of it, and it’s seriously perfect to put out during parties, picnics, and gatherings. I mean, who doesn’t enjoy tic tac toe?

Something to leave out on the porch all summer long…
What would you have done with the cake stand base? I would have loved to have found one with the glass dome (y’all remember my Christmas cheese dome project, right??), but even just the base was a project waiting to happen!
Craft on!
