From Soup to Nuts…and Bolts: Thrifted Pot Lid Bird Feeder

A new month means it’s time for yet another project for The Good Life Blog…I’m a little behind the 8-ball, though…this one went live in June but I’m just getting it up on my own blog now! Anyway…on to the project…

When I recently attended the Country Living Fair in Lebanon, Tennessee, I squeezed in a little time to check out the local thrift stores- standard operating procedure in my world! And when I came across a bin of soup pot lids (not something I typically linger over), these two colorful ones just jumped out at me.

Hello, bright colors!

I had seen photos of pot lid bird feeders on Pinterest before and decided on the spot that these mustard-and-ketchup lids would be perfect for an outdoor repurpose. Besides, there is ALWAYS more room in my yard for another junky project! This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.

After I returned from my trip, I set to work on my project. First order of business- give the lids a good sanitizing scrub (they were, admittedly, a little gross) and disassemble the knob hardware from each lid.

Super simple to take apart…

You won’t believe how easy it is to make one of these bird feeders, I promise! But you do need a handful of easy-to-find bits from the hardware store…and you just need to bring your lids with you to make sure everything fits!

You need:

  • A threaded rod that fits through the holes of your lids;
  • A coupling nut that fits your threaded rod; and
  • An eye bolt and two matching hex nuts that fit your coupling nut/rod.

Once I had everything in place, construction was easy! First, I threaded the rod through the smaller pot lid (which will become the actual feeder) and screwed on one of the original pot lid knobs on the underside (i.e., yellow side) of the lid. Then, I added one of my hex nuts to the inside of the yellow lid, and tightened everything in place.

Now, to turn these lids into a bird feeder…

Next, I screwed the other hex nut on (about an inch or two down) the top of the rod.

Ok, the platform feeder is done…

Then, I slipped the larger red pot lid on top of the rod and screwed on the coupling nut half way- and then tightened the hex nut underneath the red pot lid.

…and then the larger lid becomes the cover!

Almost done…

To the top of the coupling nut, I then screwed in the eye bolt- and it was assembled! To truly secure everything in place, I went back to each piece of hardware and added a drop or two of my favorite super glue, just for insurance.

Even I’m amazed at how simple it was to put together. Oh, and one final thing- I added a carabiner through the eye bolt for ease of hanging- but a quick link would also work, as would a loop of sturdy-but-flexible wire.

Ta-da!! A platform bird feeder with a roof/cover…from thrift store pot lids.

And now it’s ready to hang! The big red lid acts as a rain umbrella, and will also keep it shaded and cool. Now I just need to add a little petroleum jelly to my shepherd’s hook to keep Mr. Squirrel from climbing it- but how thrifty-nifty is that? And oh yeah- super easy to clean, too!

So simple, right?

Now the waiting game begins…when will my feathered friends discover it??

Craft on!
