Funny story…so, while I was out thrifting one day, I came across these two Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs. I didn’t actually know the term “hex signs” at the time, but I snapped them up with the intention of putting them in my Etsy shop. People collect Pennsylvania Dutch items…they were in relatively good shape and would be easy to ship, so it seemed like a no-brainer.

My muses!
But as I was putting the Etsy listing together, a project idea started to percolate…
And well, here we are- with a new project on the blog and not an Etsy listing in sight! It’s funny how things work out sometimes.
So, I had this idea…as I studied the hex signs, I was flooded with thoughts of barn art I’d seen on my travels…quilt squares and Pennsylvania Dutch emblems…and I thought about our cute little blue shed in the backyard. We may not have a barn, but why not decorate the shed in the same fashion? Suburban barn art, in a way… This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.
To put my idea into action, I needed a wood plank- just the right length and width- so I headed to a local salvage shop. Because OF COURSE I didn’t have the perfect piece in my stash!

Looking for just the right plank…
But with a little digging, I found just the right piece!

This will do nicely!
Normally I love a chipped paint look…but not the brown/black combo this piece was sporting! So, Mr. Seasongoods offered to give the plank a refresh with our beloved sander. And just look at that grain!

Smooth and pretty.
After I dusted it clean, I gave it a generous coat of a favorite wood stain. To weather it a little further, I then gave it an uneven grey paint wash…a coat of water sealant…and then called it a day!

Getting ready for a makeover…

Now it looks like weathered barn wood- well, at least close enough!
Then, we just fixed the hex signs to the wood plank with screws- the signs already had holes in the centers- and attached a pair of D-ring hangers and braided picture hanging wire to the back.

Perfect and ready to hang…but, we don’t have a barn…
All that was left to do was hang it on our shed- a little touch of country barn art in the small city suburbs!

Ta-da!
Here, let me take a few steps back…

Art for our cute lil’ shed!
Oh, you want me to step back even further? I think that can be arranged…

Looks like there is room for more “barn” shed art, eh??
If I leave it there, I’ll give the whole thing another couple of coats of water sealant…but now I think I want to hunt down a quilt square to add to it- what do you think??
Craft on!
