Last year around this time, I put together a round-up of Repurposed Classroom Items (globes, rulers, desks, etc.). September is all about back-to-school, after all! But along those same lines, it conjures up the idea of Friday Night Lights and all things sports. Upcycling sports equipment is something I’ve dabbled in, but only with tennis rackets. I’ve upcycled racket heads into oversized cross stitch…

Remember these?
And repurposed the racket handles into funky necklace pendants…

Available in my Etsy shop!
But there are some seriously amazing ideas out there- using everything from golf clubs, to hockey sticks, to trophies and medals. Let me show you some of my favorites…and maybe it’ll encourage you to dust off that old, neglected sports equipment and give it a new lease on life.

For the hockey fan, how about a picture frame using a stick AND the puck?
Oh my gosh, these wine bottle toppers from old bowling trophies are fantastic- I LOVE their new colorful outfits!
DIY “reindeer” using vintage tennis racket (racquet?) frames / presses- how brilliant is that!?
Golf clubs are always at thrift stores- and repurposing them into wind chimes is wonderfully fun.
I’m positively terrible at foosball / table soccer, but I LOVE this DIY upcycled coatrack!
How fun (and a great gift)- bottle openers from repurposed golf clubs and tennis racket handles.
BRILLIANT! Repurposed football pads turned into fun steampunk costume elements for Halloween.
DIY light cages using fencing masks– how cool is that?
I can almost hear the roller rink announcer yelling “Couples Skate!” when I see this skate planter, because I love it so much.
This is such a fun way to display your medals– a whimsical (and pretty!) set of wind chimes for the porch!
A baseball bat bar stool is a fun way to decorate your home bar.
Even if you don’t have a Labrador, you can still put tennis balls to good use- as friendly organizers!
Mama’s got a brand new bag when you embellish a colorful old bowling ball bag.
Just in time for Halloween- upcycled bowling pin ghosts!!
I might never look at a vintage golf club head the same way again after seeing this one transformed into a duck paper weight…
Speaking of golf…I would LOVE a family of golf ball ladybugs in my yard!
A toe shoe sunburst wreath for your ballerina!
How about a handsome bi-fold wallet from a wonderfully worn leather baseball glove?
Vintage tennis racket / racquet frames or presses have so many reuse possibilities- like this DIY bulletin board!
Fishing reel handles are the perfect “hooks” for a DIY coat hanger- something I would never have thought of.

Seriously, though- aren’t these ideas amazing? There is truly something for everyone here- no matter the sport you like or a DIY that speaks to you. Players, spectators, and coaches alike can put their old equipment to good reuse- the possibilities (and ideas) are endless!
Craft on!
