Here we are- in JANUARY- with the holidays behind us and a new year before us. And as a blogger, DIY/Repurposed décor projects during the winter months are tough…winter decorating during the often bleak days of January and February presents unique challenges. So, I decided to revisit an old favorite- flannel- with a new project…and it just so happens to be my January contribution to The Good Life blog, as well.
Even though we keep most of our firewood on the back porch, I like the look of a few logs on the hearth. After scouring my local thrift stores, I decided to forgo the more expensive option (brass) and nabbed a wide-set wicker basket instead.

I spy a treasure for winter…
I brought it home, set it on our brick hearth (to make sure it fit well enough) when I realized just how…brown…everything was.

That’s a lot of…same.
Heck, even the cat blended in.

But his white fur pops…hmm…
So, I decided to give a complete makeover to the basket so that it set off nicely on the brick AND brought a touch of “cozy” to the room. This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.
First order of business- remove as much dust as possible from the basket (it was, admittedly, pretty gross), and paint it white.

Let the makeover begin!
After giving it a couple of coats of spray paint, I let it dry and headed out to find just the right flannel shirt. And luck was on my side when I saw this sign!

To quote the Kool-aid man…OH, YEAHHHH!
For winter decorating, I go for blues, cool greens, and touches of brown or white (kind of like a snowy winter landscape). I liked how this blue flannel looked against my basket and decided to put it to work. (And worth noting, it had a big ole’ hole where the last buttonhole should be…so it was a perfect candidate for repurposing!)

These will work lovely together!
To bring my idea to life, I cut off the sleeves and set the rest of the shirt aside for another day/project. From there, I cut long, same-width strips of flannel, using the plaid lines as my cutting guides.

Preparing my cozy touch…
Then, similarly to what I did in the Fall, I stitched the strips end-to-end, ironed the connecting seams flat, and hemmed the long sides. Now, I had DIY flannel ribbon- which is exactly what I was looking for.

DIY flannel ribbon!
Now I was ready to make my basket “cozy”! I hot-glued one end of my flannel ribbon to the inside of the basket handle, and began carefully wrapping the ribbon round and round.

See where I’m going with this?
And when I reached the other side, I snipped off the excess ribbon, folded the end under and hot glued it to the inside handle.

There! Clean, bright, but with a winter-y, cozy feel.
What a transformation, eh? The flannel adds just a touch of “cozy”…and it has a much better hand-feel than the bare painted basket!

This will pop on the hearth!
Now I just need to lug it back to the fireplace! And keep your eyes peeled this Spring…chances are, the rest of this blue flannel will make a crafty appearance. <wink>
Craft on!
