Hook, Line, and Sink-Oar: A Coat Rack

I’ve hinted at it on Facebook…and again in my Best of 2016 post- the idea of cabin-themed projects this year. My in-laws are putting the finishing touches on a cabin in the North Georgia mountains- which means I get to add a new facet to my blog! Whether decorative, functional, or both, I will periodically do cabin-themed projects…and when the cabin is done and ready, I’ll be sure to start including links and pictures so you can see it!

For my inaugural Cabin post of 2017, I focused on a beat-up, crusty old oar / paddle that I procured from my favorite vintage junk seller.

It’s in oar-able shape!

And when I say beat-up, I mean it! It was well-loved and pushed and pulled water off the side of someone’s canoe for a long time. It just needed a little TLC and some repurposing magic to bring it back to life! This post contains affiliate links for your crafting convenience.

See what I mean? Some TLC is definitely required.

Because it was a splinter waiting to happen, we gave it a good sanding-down until it was buttery smooth.

Makeover, Step 1.

Initially, I figured I’d stain it- after all, I *love* a good wood stain. But the oar was begging for moisture- years of river/lake life had dried it out terribly. So, I applied some of my favorite wood conditioner, which I have on hand for my cutting boards. Holy transformation, Batman…

Hello, my pretty…

I swear you could hear the oar breathe a sigh of relief…

To add just a touch of color, I decided to stencil on some nautical-esque stripes to the paddle.

For just a touch of color…

Ironically, I chose craft paint in blue that perfectly matched my painter’s tape! But regardless, I carefully stippled a scant amount of white and blue craft paint between the strips of tape.Adding nautical stripes to a vintage canoe paddle oar to be repurposed and upcycled into a DIY coat hook rack for Cabin decor by Sadie Seasongoods / www.sadieseasongoods.com

And then it was MY turn to breathe a sigh of relief when I removed the tape! (I’m still working on my stenciling skills, after all!) But doesn’t that look nice? Just a touch of color to pop against the natural wood.

It worked!

Ok- we’re in the home (cabin?) stretch! I gave the entire oar- front and back- two light coats of sealer before adding the hardware: D-rings on the back for hanging…and coat hooks on the front for…well, hanging OTHER things.

Finishing touches…

Final result? A fun-ctional coat rack for all your cabin wearables & carryables- flannels, scarves, fishing nets, etc. I really do feel like we revived that old oar from something unwanted into something gorgeous!

Ta-da!

I promise to update this post when it’s hanging in the cabin- and I’ll add updated photos on Facebook and Instagram, as well. I hope you don’t mind more cabin-esque projects throughout the year…I’m pretty excited and I hope you are, too.

Craft on!
